Other Michigan State Agencies
The Michigan State Police oversees the Criminal Justice Information Center (CJIC), which acts as the state’s central repository for all criminal records. The CJIC collects criminal records from prosecutors, the court system and law enforcement agencies in order to compile a dynamic database for all pending charges, arrests and convictions. Michigan background checks can be conducted by anyone, although only public Michigan criminal background check information will be released in these cases.
All conviction information related to crimes that command a punishment in excess of 93 days are reported to the CJIC for inclusion in the database. Background checks in Michigan for individuals and businesses are largely name-based searches. A full name and date of birth are the minimum information required to perform a Michigan background check. Criminal justice agencies may access an individual’s complete criminal history, and an individual may review his own complete record for accuracy, although a fingerprint search is recommended for accuracy.

Michigan Background Check Special Notes
Although background checks in Michigan are mostly name-based, fingerprint searches can be completed under certain circumstances. For example, some state agencies might require this type of Michigan background check, such as immigration and employers. Michigan criminal background checks can be performed from the comfort of a home computer, making it easy for individuals to conduct criminal history searches. It’s important to remember that name-based searches can result in false positives, meaning a criminal record might appear on the record of another person due to a similarity in name, date of birth or fraud. This is why the CJIC has measures in place to help individuals correct any mistakes found on their own criminal records. Should a mistake be found, the proper procedures should be followed to ensure the record in question is corrected.
