Maryland Public Records

Maryland public records date to the 1600s, with ancient records available at the Maryland State Archives. Maryland public records are available in person or by mail (no online orders) from the Department of Health, Division of Vital Records, in Baltimore. Birth records are available from 1898 (Baltimore from 1975), death records from 1969, and marriage records from 1990; older records must be obtained from the Maryland State Archives. Birth certificates after 1939 are also available at local health departments. For recent years, copies of birth records are restricted to the person whose birth is recorded and other interested parties as defined by the court.

  • Montgomery County

    Maryland's Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Vital Records is responsible for maintaining birth and death records. The individual in question must either have been born in Montgomery County of have died in the state of Maryland in order to have the documents available through Montgomery County's Office of Vital Records.

  • Prince Georges County

    Maryland's Prince George's County Health Department is responsible for maintaining birth and death records, while the Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court is responsible for maintaining court records for all county courts. All records are available for public review, with the exception of juvenile or adoption cases, which can only be accessed with an order of the court.

  • Baltimore County

    Maryland's Baltimore County Circuit Court is responsible for maintaining public records, such as land records, birth and death certificates, and marriage and divorce records. Records may be obtained by contacting the Clerk of the Court in person, by writing or by requesting a copy online through the Maryland Vital Statistics Administration.
