The Alabama Department of Public Safety (DPS) is the primary law enforcement agency for the state and oversees six divisions, including the Highway Patrol and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, which supports Alabama’s criminal justice system with its latent print unit and the state’s fusion center.

Alabama criminal records searches are fingerprint based only. You must submit a completed request form that includes your fingerprints taken at your local law enforcement agency and a certified check or money order for $25 to ACJIC. It takes 5 to 10 business days to process most requests.

Alabama criminal records are housed at ACJIC (Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center). Alabama only allows citizens to review personal criminal records. Law enforcement agencies with a criminal justice purpose and certain employers are the only exceptions. The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) is not only responsible for all prisons within Alabama, but also for operating many public programs that allow family members and friends to interact with loved ones in prison. For instance, you can send money to an inmate or even a care package that includes approved footwear, basic hygiene products or electronics.
Inmate Records At This Office:
Alabama inmate lookup searches are performed online through ADOC’s “inmate search” feature. Simply input the inmate’s AIS (Alabama Institutional Serial) number and first or last name in order to learn current incarceration information on that inmate. If the AIS number isn’t known, search using full name.
Access To Alabama Inmate Records:
Alabama inmate records open to the public include information about the facility where an inmate is incarcerated, when the inmate is scheduled for release and the location of an inmate’s pending release. Juvenile offender information is not available to the public. Also, Alabama inmate lookup will only return record results for inmates currently incarcerated.

This data includes non-violent crimes such as motor vehicle theft and burglary, as well as crimes like forcible rape and non-negligent manslaughter. The office also provides statistics from the Alabama Law Enforcement Directory, which includes all of the official criminal justice entities operating within the state.
Access to Alabama Background Checks:
To receive information about Alabama criminal background checks, the state offers online request forms that you can complete from the convenience of home. Some requests do require official fingerprinting, which can take place at any law enforcement agency. This process allows access to a wide range of official documentation, including arrest records and criminal records. There is a fee to obtain some of the documentation through this agency.
