California law requires the California Department of Justice (DOJ) to maintain all criminal records submitted by the courts and law enforcement agencies of the state. The DOJ is directly affiliated with the Attorney General’s office and is comprised of the state’s court system as well.

Criminal records are located using fingerprint searches. Individuals must download a Live Scan Form and check “Record Review” as the application type. Then, take the form to local law enforcement to have your fingerprints taken. A fee of $25 goes to the DOJ, but most law enforcement agencies charge a fingerprinting fee, which varies.

The DOJ is required to maintain California criminal records, which include arrests, detentions and dispositions reported by law enforcement and the courts.
