About This Office:

The State Police Bureau of Identification maintains the criminal records database and is part of the Connecticut Department of Public Safety (DPS). The DPS is made up of three distinct divisions: State Police, Division of Fire, Emergency and Building Services, and Division of Scientific Services.

Connecticut criminal records requests can only be made by mail. You must fill out a criminal history request form for each name you’re searching. Name-based searches cost $50 per name, and you should include any known aliases. If you need a fingerprint-based search completed, you will pay an additional $15 fee for having fingerprints taken at your local law enforcement agency.

Connecticut criminal records are considered public information and are available to individuals and employers requesting them. Public criminal records consist of arrests, dispositions and convictions recorded as part of the public record. Sealed records and charges that were dismissed are not available to the public.

About This Office:

The Connecticut Department of Corrections (CDOC) oversees 18 correctional facilities with 17 currently in operation. Male prisoners are housed in 15 facilities, juvenile males in one, and female prisoners in the remaining facility.

Connecticut inmate lookup can be performed online through CDOC or by calling the Public Information Office if the inmate information you seek isn’t available online. You can search online using a combination of inmate number, name and date of birth. Inmate information is updated as regularly as possible online, but delays do occur, especially if a sudden event takes place that alters an inmate’s situation.

Inmate records are compiled through the Public Information Office, and they are, in general, available to the public in order to promote public safety and awareness. Inmate records available to the public include the individual inmate number assigned to each prisoner, date of birth, prisoner status, location of facility, date of admission, primary offense, sentencing date and details, tentative release date and a photo.

Connecticut background checks begin at the Connecticut Department of Public Safety, an agency that provides local police reports, as well as criminal history records. Beginning in 1935, records of mug shots and fingerprints began to be kept on file in the state. The agency works hand in hand with other departments within the Connecticut state government, such as the Judicial Branch, to provide citizens with complete information about court and criminal happenings in the state.

The Connecticut Department of Public Safety handles all requests for Connecticut criminal background checks. The agency also offers fingerprinting services for an additional fee. In addition, individuals can go through the Department of Public Safety to locate accident and incident reports and other records from the Connecticut State Police. The department also issues letter of good conduct upon request.

Access to Connecticut Background Checks:

To obtain a Connecticut criminal background check from the Department of Public Safety, there is a request form to download and complete. The form can be used for both name and fingerprint searches. If you are requesting a fingerprint search, a fingerprint card must be included with the request, as well as the proper fees for documentation. Information can be requested by mail, but the department also answers questions by phone.
