Maryland Criminal Justice Information System

About This Office:

The Maryland DPSCS is responsible for the Criminal Justice Information Repository, which houses all criminal records for the state. The DPSCS also oversees the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, Firearms Safety Training, and the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions.

Criminal Records At This Office:

Individuals must go to a Maryland State Police office to be fingerprinted for a criminal record request and must present government issued photo identification. The fingerprinting fee is $5 per card, with two cards being the usual requirement. The state background check fee is $18. The fingerprint cards will be used to search the repository, and results typically take a few weeks to receive. If your employer requested a criminal records check, you must bring the employer’s authorization number with you before fingerprints will be taken.

Access To Maryland Criminal Records:

Maryland criminal records are only available to authorized state, government and employment entities, as well as criminal justice agencies. Individuals may receive a copy of their personal Maryland criminal record, which will contain all arrest records whether a conviction resulted or not. Victims who need more specific information should register with VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) to learn details like release date and sentence information.

The DOC offers the public access to inmate records to promote public awareness and provide needed information to friends and family of inmates, to victims, or for research purposes. Available inmate records include the location of incarceration facility, the facility’s address and phone number, a link to the facility for additional information and the offender’s birth date.

Those who are conducting Maryland background checks for employment purposes do not have to pay a fee to use the service.

Access to Maryland Background Checks:

Fingerprint searches are the most reliable types of Maryland criminal background checks offered. To initiate one of these searches, you must first request a Maryland Fingerprint Card Order Form. The fingerprint card, as well as the appropriate fee, can be sent directly to the Maryland Department of Public Safety. and results typically take 10 to 15 business days.
