North Dakota Division of Criminal Justice Services

About This Office:

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) is North Dakota’s central database containing the state’s criminal records compiled from arrest and prosecution records submitted by courts and law enforcement. BCI is a division of the Attorney General’s Office.

Criminal Records At This Office:

Public criminal records requests must include a completed form, $15 fee and two identifying markers, such as fingerprints, social security number or date of birth of the subject. Fingerprint searches are the most accurate and are recommended for personal criminal records requests.

Access To North Dakota Criminal Records:

North Dakota criminal records are available to non-criminal justice agencies and individuals in a limited form. The exception is individuals requesting personal criminal records and approved state agencies and law enforcement, who can access third parties complete criminal records. Public criminal records include convictions, dismissed charges less than three years old, incarceration records less than three years old and arrests for felonies or misdemeanors. Juvenile records and older charges are restricted.

North Dakota Department of Correctional Services

About This Office:

The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCR) is responsible for overseeing both adult and juvenile offenders in the state. DOCR maintains three state prisons, a youth correctional center and eight community centers for juveniles. DOCR is also responsible for overseeing the parole and probation offices.

Inmate Records At This Office:

North Dakota inmate lookup can be completed online through the DOCR’s online search system. Users may only search using the last name and must then find the correct name in the resulting list. Victims who want to be notified may click on the VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) link found on the inmate’s record page to register with VINE and get notified should the offender’s status change.

Access To North Dakota Inmate Records:

DOCR holds inmate records for those incarcerated, on parole or probation in North Dakota. The public has limited access to these records, however. Inmate records available to the public will include a photo, the inmate’s full name and date of birth, estimated release date and location of incarceration, which includes an address and contact phone number.

North Dakota Attorney General

About This Office:

The North Dakota Attorney General’s office oversees the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), which updates and maintains the central repository for criminal records. The criminal records collected include all arrests, prosecutions and subsequent dispositions. The BCI answers requests from law enforcement, the court system and the public for criminal histories.

Background Checks At This Office:

North Dakota criminal background checks may be requested by anyone, although the subject of the criminal record will be notified by mail if third-party requests are made unless an authorization was signed. Criminal records include convictions plus incarceration records, dismissed charges or charges with no resulting disposition less than three years old.

Access to North Dakota Background Checks:

North Dakota background checks require individuals to fill out a request form and remit with a fee. If requesting criminal records of another person, you must include the mailing address for the subject of the record unless the subject signed an authorization. Searches are name-based. although fingerprint cards can be submitted.
