Per statute, fingerprint-based background checks are to be conducted for paid or volunteer employment or licensing such as such as child care, teachers, security and armed guards, security system contractors, etc.

- Tennessee criminal records released include all felony and misdemeanor arrests supported by fingerprints. Even arrests where charges were dismissed will appear on the criminal record unless charges were expunged from the record. Individuals may request personal criminal records, as well as third party records.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s (TBI) Information Systems Division maintains and disseminates criminal records. The TBI provides two types of criminal background checks: fingerprint-based checks for employers and name-based criminal checks for the general public. Fingerprint-based checks are run through the Tennessee Applicant Processing Services system. Name-based checks can be completed online or in writing through the Tennessee Open Records Information Services (TORIS) system. The fee to process an online or written name-based criminal background check is $29 payable by money order, cashier’s check, or credit card. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation can provide fee information for fingerprint-based checks. |
The Identification Services Section of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation provides access to criminal records based on fingerprint data in its central repository. |
