Virginia Criminal Record Check Section

About This Office:

The Virginia State Police operate the Central Criminal Records Exchange (CCRE), the central repository for all criminal records for arrests within Virginia. CCRE also operates the Non-Criminal Justice Interface (NCJI), which is an online system used for searching Virginia criminal records.

Criminal Records At This Office:

NCJI is only available to approved entities for easier name-based searches of third parties for $15 per name. Requests can also be mailed with the appropriate request form. If employers are required to perform a fingerprint search, the cost is $13 per search. Individuals must return a signed and notarized criminal record name search form with $15 per name. If performing a third party request, the subject must sign form as well.

Access To Virginia Criminal Records:

Virginia criminal records can be requested by individuals wishing to review personal records, as well as the general public, although only limited criminal records are available to the public. Authorized state agencies and employers may request complete criminal records on third parties, which include all arrests regardless of outcome.

Virginia Department of Corrections

About This Office:

The Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) maintains and operates 44 facilities throughout the state, including state prisons, jails, work centers, pre-release centers and correctional units. The DOC is also responsible for the parole board and for promoting public safety by trying to rehabilitate offenders and prepare them for a crime-free life.

Inmate Records At This Office:

Virginia inmate lookup can be done online through DOC’s online offender search system, online through VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) or by phone through VINE. The DOC’s search portal requires users to enter either the DOC ID number or enter the first and last name. VINE only gives information concerning status and location of inmates, but will notify registered victims of any changes, such as an inmate who escapes, dies, is transferred or released.

Access To Virginia Inmate Records:

The DOC offers limited public records for inmates. Available inmate records include name, inmate ID number and DOC number, gender, race, location of incarceration and projected release date.

The Virginia State Police is responsible for maintaining criminal records for the state, as well as overseeing the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Bureau of Field Operations and Bureau of Administrative and Support Services. These work together to enforce the law and make Virginia a safer place to live, work and visit.

Background Checks At This Office:

Virginia criminal background checks may be requested by individuals wishing to review their own record only. Virginia background checks can be requested for third parties if the subject signs the authorization release and is usually done by employers. Virginia criminal records searches are name-based and return misdemeanor and felony arrests and dispositions.

Access to Virginia Background Checks:

To request Virginia background checks, individuals must fill out the request form and get it notarized. Once this is completed, the form should be mailed with the appropriate fee to the Virginia State Police. Criminal records results will be mailed usually between twelve and fourteen business days after the request is received.
