Access to North Carolina Incarceration Records

Records Available:
NC DOC maintains all inmate records and is responsible for disseminating them to law enforcement and to the public. The public may access inmate records that include physical descriptors like gender, age and race, as well as a photo. The public may also view an inmate’s location of incarceration or probation office assigned, sentence information including start and projected end dates, type of crime, inmate status, last movement information, upcoming custody reviews and full conviction history.

The North Carolina Division of Adult Correction maintains an online Offender Information Portal that can be accessed only by law enforcement agents. Criminal justice personnel must apply for access through the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (DPS). Public incarceration records are available to any individual through the North Carolina Department of Public Safety’s website The website allows users to search by offender status, name, offender number, age, or gender.

Records of offenders who are currently under the jurisdiction of the North Carolina Division of Adult Correction are available through the North Carolina DPS website.
