A Connecticut background check begins at the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, where the Division of State Police is located. The process for obtaining background checks in Connecticut is relatively quick and inexpensive, although the process is not as automated as it is in other states. The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection provides a single form to request a Connecticut background check, whether the search will be conducted on the individual’s name alone or in conjunction with a fingerprint check.

The state of Connecticut allows any member of the general public to initiate a Connecticut criminal background check using the appropriate submission form. The procedures are handled through the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, because this is the state office that is responsible for “protecting and improving the quality of life” for all residents of the state. The office offers enforcement and protection services through prevention and education, with a focus on technology tools to achieve this purpose.

Steps for Retriving a Connecticut Background Check

Step 1

Look up the form for the Connecticut background check, which is found at the website for the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, under the Division of State Police. A copy or facsimile of this form may be used for the request.

Step 2

Complete the form, providing as much information as possible on the individual to be researched. A full name and date of birth must be provided. Maiden names and aliases will make the search more complete and accurate.

Step 3

Provide your information as the requester of the information. The form requires the requester’s name, address and phone number. A reason for the request does not have to be included.

Step 4

Add the fee for the search to your submission. Currently, background checks in Connecticut cost $50, which may be submitted by check or money order.

Step 5

If a fingerprint-based background check is requested, fingerprints must be taken at a law enforcement agency. Fingerprints are also available through the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection for a $15 fee. The fingerprint card must be submitted with the application, and the request for a fingerprint search must be checked at the top of the form.

Connecticut Background Check Special Notes

Unlike other states, Connecticut background checks are available to members of the general public. A reason for the request does not have to be included with the submission form. Those wishing to perform background checks are typically employers screening potential employees, especially employees that might have access to financial information or those that work with children and other dependents. However, some individuals like to check their personal criminal histories to ensure accuracy and completeness of the information.
