Florida criminal background checks begin with a visit to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. This agency includes the Criminal History Information, which is the central repository for all the criminal records found in the state of Florida. The files within this collection are updated regularly to ensure you receive the most current information on individuals you wish to research. Files are open to the general public in the state of Florida, so anyone can request a Florida criminal background check for their own purposes.

Services provided by the Department of Law Enforcement Criminal History Information are conducted on a self-service basis. This means the person initiating the search is responsible for ensuring the information provided on the Florida background check matches the specific person who is the subject of the search. The process becomes more accurate when more information is provided on the individual, particularly if fingerprints are included as data for the search. The process is conducted entirely online, and results are available nearly instantaneously.

Steps for Retriving a Florida Background Check

Step 1

Provide credit card information so the agency can charge you for the files you are about to request. The cost of a Florida background check is currently $24, which must be paid by credit card before the search can commence. This fee gives you a single file; if more than one file comes up on the name you provide, you will have to pay for each individual file separately.

Step 2

Complete the search criteria, keeping in mind the more information you are able to provide, the more accurate your search results will be. Double check all information and spelling, since errors in this form can nullify your search efforts.

Step 3

Wait for your search results. These results are returned to your browser screen almost instantaneously and will include information on every person found with the information you provided. Check through the results to find the person that most closely matches your criteria – never assume the first or second name listed is your most likely candidate.

Step 4

If more than one result if offered, you will be allowed to select the results you want to look at. The initial $24 fee will cover the first individual; others will require an additional $24 fee to view results.

Step 5

Although fingerprints are not required to conduct Florida background checks, you can submit this information by having the subject get fingerprints taken through a Live Scan location in the state.

Florida Background Check Special Notes

Background checks in Florida are available to any interested party, unlike other states that only allow background checks to be conducted by authorized entities or individuals searching for their own criminal histories. This state makes the process relatively easy by providing all procedures electronically as long as you have a credit card handy to pay the fee. Persons who are not able to pay by credit card can also submit requests for Florida background checks through the U.S. mail, using a check or money order for the fee amount.
