Those interested in working in a variety of industries in the state of Louisiana, including gaming, health care and child care, will require a Louisiana background check before they can get to work. These histories are typically requested by authorized agencies – often the employers of these workers. The process of retrieving a Louisiana background check has now become much faster and more convenient, thanks to an online service referred to as the Louisiana Computerized Criminal History System.

The Louisiana Criminal History System is maintained by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information for the state. This office is responsible for managing arrest and conviction information on those who have been arrested in the state of Louisiana. It also holds the records for incarcerations and provides information on those who are “wanted” in the state. Records are accessed through fingerprint-based searches that ensure accuracy of the Louisiana criminal background check records.

Steps for Retriving a Louisiana Background Check

Step 1

Complete the Authorization Form, that provides permission from the subject for completing the search. This form requires the subject to give his personal information, including a full name, date of birth, social security number, driver’s license number, sex, race and position or license applied for. The purpose of the request must also be completed.

Step 2

A Disclosure Form must also be completed when an employer is requesting a Louisiana criminal background check on an employee. This form can also be found at the website for the Louisiana state government.

Step 3

If the request is on someone involved in a state board like the State Board of Medical Examiners, a Rap Disclosure Form may also be required. This form is similar to the general disclosure form, but requires the attachment of a rap sheet as well.

Step 4

These forms can be downloaded either through the website for the Louisiana state government, or through the Louisiana State Police website. Forms must be completed in entirety and submitted to the Louisiana Criminal History System.

Step 5

Results will be sent to the agency making the request, and will include all records within the State of Louisiana’s criminal history database. The office for the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information does not provide a timeline in their general information as to how long these results might take.

Louisiana Background Check Special Notes

Although Louisiana calls their system computerized, the files are not accessible online at this time. Forms must be completed by the subject of the search, and a signature is required to authorize background checks in Louisiana. In addition, these searches are only available to authorized agencies that require Louisiana background checks for licensing and employment.
