Nebraska background checks are controlled by the Nebraska State Patrol Criminal Identification Division (CID), which is the central source for criminal records in the state. Fingerprints are also compiled in this repository. The CID is in charge of compiling and disseminating accurate criminal records and must comply with requests for Nebraska background checks. The general public is allowed to request Nebraska background checks on anyone in the form of a RAP sheet (Record of Arrest and Prosecution). A Nebraska criminal background check will not include private records, like dismissed charges or arrests with no disposition.

All dispositions, including acquittals, pardons, and nullified convictions, will be included on RAP sheets. Individuals may also request their own criminal history to check for accuracy. Requests for background checks in Nebraska can be mailed or done in person at the CID office. Nebraska is an open records state, which makes it easier to obtain criminal histories. Name-based searches can be unreliable or inaccurate, but procedures are in place to rectify errors should an individual discover a mistake on a personal record.

Steps for Retriving a Nebraska Background Check

Step 1

Obtain a Criminal History Record Request Form and fill it out completely. A social security number isn’t required, but makes the search faster.

Step 2

Mail the form with the appropriate fee to the address listed on the form.

Step 3

Include a correct return address or a fax number in order to receive results.

Step 4

If you prefer not to mail the form, bring it in to the address on the form and get the results in person.

Step 5

Certain requests for individuals accessing their own criminal history records will require that the form be notarized. Contact CID for clarification.

Nebraska Background Check Special Notes

Background checks in Nebraska are easy to obtain for individuals wishing to learn whether someone else has a criminal record or to check a personal record. Nebraska criminal background checks can be performed for employment reasons, to check out a potential tenant, or even to learn about a neighbor. Only a fingerprint search will return completely accurate results, since name searches can sometimes return results belonging to another individual. This is why entering any known aliases, even a maiden name or alternate spelling, can help narrow down the field to ensure the most accurate results are returned.
