The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is the central repository for the all criminal records in the state. OSBI receives criminal records supported by fingerprints from law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and the courts. In general, only serious misdemeanors and felonies are reported to OSBI. If no fingerprints were taken at the time of arrest or the fingerprints aren’t usable, the record will not be included in the OSBI repository. Oklahoma background checks can be conducted by anyone, as Oklahoma is an open records state. Individuals who request an Oklahoma background check will receive a copy of the subject’s RAP sheet (Record of Arrests and Prosecutions).
Background checks in Oklahoma can be conducted via a name-based search or a fingerprint search. Although fingerprint searches are more reliable, a name-based search is faster and doesn’t require obtaining fingerprints from the individual in question. Oklahoma background checks return all arrests, convictions and disposition information on file, even if the disposition resulted in dismissed charges, deferred sentence, or an acquittal. To perform an Oklahoma criminal background check, the full name and date of birth are the minimum information required. However, it’s helpful to provide any known aliases or former names, social security number, race and gender to help narrow down results.

Oklahoma Background Check Special Notes
Background checks in Oklahoma can conveniently be requested in person at the OSBI office, provided the request is for a name-based search. A single request is usually satisfied in fifteen minutes, while multiple requests for Oklahoma criminal background checks can usually be dropped off in the morning and picked up that same afternoon. A fingerprint search takes at least a month to complete, but is a more thorough method for checking someone’s criminal history. Individuals may also request name-based searches by mail or fax if an in-person request is not feasible.
