The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) acts as the state’s central repository for criminal records. The DCI also oversees and maintains the state’s Sex Offender Registry, Automated Fingerprint Identification System, Computerized Criminal History system, Midwest Automated Fingerprint Identification Network, plus requests for a South Dakota criminal background check. South Dakota background checks are available to the individual of record and to authorized employers. Also, law enforcement and criminal justice agencies may view individuals’ complete South Dakota criminal background check.
South Dakota background checks are based solely on fingerprints, as this is the only reliable method for determining the extent of a person’s criminal history. Sealed records and juvenile records won’t be included in a South Dakota background check, although arrests, convictions and dispositions will be included. A fingerprint search typically won’t return a record that doesn’t belong to the individual in question because it isn’t based on name or date of birth, but solely on fingerprints. Someone with arrest records under five aliases, for example, will still have these records returned in one fingerprint search.
