5 Million Gmail Passwords Leaked – Protect Yours

How safe is your password? That is the question on many people’s minds after nearly 5 million Gmail addresses and passwords were posted online last week. The list, which was posted on a Russian Bitcoin forum, is believed to consist of passwords acquired from phishing tactics or third-party websites. Many of the passwords were reportedly outdated or used for accounts on multiple websites. Google confirmed that their system was not breached.

Over 2,000 Home Depot stores in the U.S. and Canada were hacked in the latest retail data breach. Malware was used to collect credit and debit card information from customers through Home Depot’s payment systems. The store announced on Monday that customers could have been affected as far back as April 2014.

Army Veterans Reconnect Through PeopleSmart

At PeopleSmart, we're always excited to hear about the ways people use our site to connect. Recently, we read about a United States Army brigade that reunited 40 years after serving together in Vietnam. Chuck Cape of Canton, GA, who served as a Sergeant and Squad Leader in the 196th Light Infantry Brigade of the Army's Americal Division in 1970-71, talked to us about how he was able bring his unit together for a long-awaited reunion. After a fellow soldier sent him a Facebook message last year, Cape decided it was time to find the rest of the brigade. After four decades, there were challenges.

Stolen Identity Reclaimed After 19 Years

It's never a bad time to think about protecting yourself from identity theft. There's no national holiday for identity theft awareness--yet--but states and cities all over the country observe their own events throughout the year. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn declared Sept. 25 to Oct. 1 Identity Theft Awareness Week, so we took this opportunity to share a surprising story that was in the news recently. A small mistake led to 19 years of stolen identity. As a college student in 1990, Patrick Guest realized his wallet was stolen at the gym. After filing a police report, he nearly forgot the incident until he received a strange bill two years later.
