The Kentucky State Police (KSP) maintain the Criminal Records Dissemination Section, which acts as a central repository for all Kentucky criminal records. KSP operates highway safety patrol, maintains the sex offender registry and has a division dedicated to internet crimes against children and to missing children.

Kentucky criminal records are requested using a name-based search. Approved entities and individuals must fill out the appropriate form and submit a $20 fee per name by mail or in person to KSP Criminal Records Dissemination Section office located in Frankfort.
Access To Kentucky Criminal Records:
Kentucky restricts access to criminal records to authorized users only, so Kentucky criminal records are not released to the general public. Only authorized entities may conduct a criminal records check, including authorized employers, state agencies and law enforcement agencies. KSP will also release criminal records for housing, licensing, emigration and adoption or foster care purposes, as well as to individuals requesting to review their personal criminal record.

Kentucky inmate lookup is an online tool that KDOC calls KOOL (Kentucky Offender Online Lookup). which is available as a public access tool for offender records. Search using inmate’s ID number or using a combination of name and physical descriptors.
Access To Kentucky Inmate Records:
Inmate records are available to the public on demand through KDOC and include a photo of the inmate along with physical descriptors like age, race, gender, eye and hair color, height and weight, plus the offender’s date of birth. Also considered public record are the facility where the inmate is housed, conviction information, current status, scheduled hearings, sentence information and tentative release date.

The Kentucky Court of Justice offers a broad range of records for individuals conducting Kentucky background checks. The office provides an online database to make searches fast and convenient, and it features court information from all 120 Kentucky counties. Misdemeanor and traffic cases date back five years, and felonies date all the way back to 1978.
Background Checks At This Office:
There are two different types of Kentucky criminal background checks handled through this state office. The first is a standard criminal check, which features four levels of information. These searches are only allowed with the consent of the person who is being searched. The second type of Kentucky background check is called a vulnerable sector check, and these are performed on individuals under 18 years of age.
