Louisiana is a closed records state, meaning that Louisiana criminal records are not available to the general public. Individuals wishing to review their own criminal record may not receive a copy, but may review and copy any necessary information at your local State Police office. Authorized agencies, such as adoption agencies, may request criminal background checks, but Louisiana criminal records aren’t released for purposes of immigration, housing, litigation, personal use or work visas.

Retrieving Records

The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information acts as a repository of criminal records. Only authorized agencies and the record subject may request a criminal background check in Louisiana. Authorized agencies may perform an internet background check through the Louisiana State Police website. Authorized agents may also request criminal records using the appropriate request form. Request forms and payment may be hand-delivered or mailed. Individual record subjects may request a certified copy of their criminal history in person.


There is a fee of $26, payable by money order, cashier’s check, or business check, for a record subject or authorized agency to receive criminal records from the Louisiana State Police. When fingerprinting is required, there is an additional $10 fee.
