Where To Access Criminal Records In Maine
About This Office:
The Maine State Police are oversee the State Bureau of Identification (BCI), which maintains and distributes criminal records for both adults and juveniles.
Criminal Records At This Office:
BCI has an online site to make accessing criminal records easy. Results are typically returned by email within 2 hours. If no results are received, a manual search can be conducted by BCI staff. A name-based search is performed online, but you can also request a fingerprint search. Both searches cost $21 for online subscribers and $31 for non-subscribers. Fingerprint cards must be mailed to the BCI, and the criminal record results will be mailed back.
Access To Maine Criminal Records:
Maine criminal records are available to the general public, but are limited to criminal records that include all adults convictions and juvenile adjudication records only. Criminal justice agencies, authorized state agencies and employers may request complete criminal records. Individuals also may request to review their complete, personal Maine criminal records. Complete criminal records include all arrests and dispositions, even if no conviction resulted.

About This Office:
Four adult institutions and both juvenile centers operated by Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) were audited by the American Correctional Association and all passed, earning DOC national accreditation.
Inmate Records At This Office:
Maine inmate lookup is not currently available online to the public, but MDOC is working on developing an online inmate locater site. Victims or friends or family of inmates may email MDOC for information (Corrections.Webdesk@maine.gov) but must include the full name of the inmate, date of birth, ID number if available, and as much identifying information as possible to reduce the possibility of receiving the wrong information. Also include your name, address and a statement of purpose.
Access To Maine Inmate Records:
Inmate records are only available to family and friends of inmates or to victims of crimes. The MDOC does not have the resources to provide inmate records to the public in general without a specific reason. Inmate records are available for offenders sentenced to a term longer than nine months and include location of facility, projected release date and status.

The Maine State Police department offers a centralized, electronic database to make Maine background checks as convenient as possible. This office processes most online requests within a matter of hours, although more complex requests requiring manual assistance may take up to two weeks to complete. The office even offers a new service that allows you to obtain notarized copies of criminal records online.

The Maine State Police answers requests for Maine criminal background checks based on fingerprints or a name and date of birth for the individual. When records are found, the office provides information like convictions and charges less than one year old that are currently pending. Types of criminal records include federal and state records, prison records and police files.

Access to a Maine background check is as easy as logging on to the Internet on your home computer. Single searches can be performed for a one-time fee, or you can subscribe to the database if you will be conducting numerous Maine criminal background checks. Individuals who do not have computer access can also contact the Maine State Police for other search options.
