The CJIC allows individuals to request personal Michigan criminal records and also permits authorized state agencies, criminal justice and law enforcement agencies, as well as authorized employers, to view complete criminal records. The general public may view third party Michigan criminal records, but the results will be limited to arrests resulting in convictions.

All felonies and serious misdemeanors that are punishable by over 93 days are required to be reported to the state repository by law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and courts in all 83 Michigan counties.

Retrieving Records

The Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center (CJIC) disseminates criminal records. Individuals who want to request complete copies of their own criminal history must provide fingerprints on a Michigan Applicant Fingerprint card. The fingerprint card should be mailed to the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center, along with a cover letter explaining the request. Members of the general public, employers, and public agencies may perform a limited, name-based criminal history search using


The cost of obtaining a complete personal criminal history, including public and non-public information, is $30 per request. The cost of a name-based ICHAT search is $10 per search. This fee is waived for non-profit charitable agencies performing background checks.

Years Available

Criminal history information is maintained by the Michigan State Police CJIC throughout the life of the subject. Requests for historical records should be addressed to the CJIC.
