Individuals requesting their personal criminal record must be fingerprinted at an approved live scan site and should bring along the appropriate form and pay a $41 fee. Approved agencies and employers may request a State Fingerprint Check, which costs $41 per name and is the most accurate method for learning criminal history, or they may request a Name Check, which costs $18 per name.

New Jersey criminal records are restricted, meaning they aren’t available to the general public. Individuals may request their personal criminal records, but not those of a third party. Only authorized government and state agencies, authorized employers and entities, and law enforcement may request New Jersey criminal records on third parties. Criminal records include all convictions in New Jersey, both adult and juvenile, all pending arrests and pending charges.

The New Jersey Department of Corrections (DOC) is responsible for overseeing the DOC’s 13 correctional facilities, county jails and community halfway houses. The DOC averages 25,000 incarcerated offenders a year and strives to decrease the recidivism rate and promote public safety and inmate rehabilitation.

New Jersey inmate lookup is done online through the DOC Offender Search system. Users may search using as much identifying information as possible if the SBI number isn’t known (DOC inmate ID), including name, date of birth, gender, race, offense type or facility location.

Access To New Jersey Inmate Records:

The DOC maintains the public database of inmate records but also makes complete inmate records available to law enforcement. The public may access inmate records including full name and known aliases, race and ethnicity, gender, hair and eye color, weight and birth date along with conviction and sentence information, facility location, max release date, parole eligibility, county of commitment and mandatory sentence terms.
