West Virginia State Police (WVSP) oversees the Criminal Identification Bureau (CIB), which is the state’s repository for all criminal records and is responsible for disseminating and storing criminal histories.
Criminal Records At This Office:
CIB prefers requests for criminal records be mailed to their headquarters in Charleston. All criminal records checks are fingerprint-based to ensure accuracy. Third party requesters must therefore receive authorization from the subject, and the subject must be fingerprinted at a local law enforcement agency. The fee is $20 per search. Requests can also be made in person at CIB in Charleston, but must present government issued photo identification and remit the $20 fee.
Access To West Virginia Criminal Records:
West Virginia criminal records are available to the public upon request, as well as to authorized state agencies and employers and to individuals wishing to review personal criminal records. Complete criminal records released include all arrests and dispositions occurring in West Virginia to the date of the request.

The goal of the West Virginia Division of Corrections (WVDC) is to preserve public safety by incarcerating convicted criminals and also by trying to rehabilitate them to better function in society after release. WVDC is responsible for overseeing 12 correctional facilities, a central office, 4 work release centers, 1 training academy and 15 parole offices throughout the state.

West Virginia inmate lookup can be done online through WVDC’s online offender search program that allows the public to search using DOC number (full or partial) and/or partial last and first name.
Access To West Virginia Inmate Records:
West Virginia inmate lookup will give public records for offenders serving time or on parole or probation in the state. Inmate records available include DOC number, full name, gender, birth date, height, weight, race, status, location of correctional facility, upcoming parole hearing, maximum parole discharge date and projected release date. Also listed is the offender’s court order list, including sentencing county, date of sentence and offenses committed.

The West Virginia State Police (WSP) trains future troopers and oversees traffic safety, criminal records and maintains a sex offender registry. Although WSP collects and maintains the stateâ€™s repository of criminal records, they now outsource non-criminal justice criminal records checks to L-1 Identity Solutions. They also maintain the state crime lab.
Background Checks At This Office:
West Virginia criminal background checks are available to individuals who wish to view their own criminal record , as well as to authorized agencies and employers. All West Virginia background checks are fingerprint based searches, and results will include all misdemeanor and felony arrest and convictions. Third party requests must be authorized by the subject.
Access To West Virginia Background Records:
West Virginia State Police recently began outsourcing all West Virginia criminal background checks to L-1 Identity Solutions. Individuals must make an appointment with the local L-1 Identity Solutions office to be fingerprinted. Then, a completed request form and fee is submitted and the results are mailed to the designated recipient.
