Records Available:

IDOC allows the public to view certain inmate records, including type and class of offense committed, status of the inmate, county of commitment, incarceration facility, supervision status, projected sentence completion date and potential release date. An inmate’s age, birth date, gender and full name are also considered public record.

Iowa  Court Record Availability

When a person has a deferred judgment and is under the supervison of this Department, the record is public. When the probation is completed, the record is no longer public record.

Retrieving Records

Iowa incarceration records can be retrieved through the Iowa Department of Corrections online database. The department’s database may be searched by the offender’s name, date of birth, sex, offense, county of commitment, and the inmate’s location within the Iowa Department of Corrections system. Members of the public and law enforcement agents may search for incarceration records in the database at any time. The accuracy of the inmate records in the database is not guaranteed.

Cost

Searching for incarceration records through the Iowa Department of Corrections’ online inmate locator is free of charge to law enforcement agents, private agencies, or members of the general public.

Years Available

Records of currently incarcerated inmates are maintained in the Iowa Department of Corrections database. The inmate’s projected release date is included in the incarceration record.
